年間に熊に襲われた人がそんなに多くないのは、動物園に柵があるから。
The reason why there are but few incidents of bears attacking humans each year is because most of them are in cages at the zoo.
人間が襲われないような環境を作っているからで、そんな環境で襲われる方が難しいです。
We create an environment in which bear attacks are extremely difficult. Almost improbable.
野生のクマが本来の住処を追いやられ、森林の伐採等により食べる物すら無くなり、
餓死寸前で食料を求めて森から人里に降りて来たら、この時とばかりに猟銃翳して追い回し、射殺するのが人間。
ニュースでお馴染みのシーンですよね。
We drive them from their natural habitats through deforestation.
Verging on starvation, they are forced to venture into "our" world in search of food, only to be hunted down by us humans, ready and eager, guns poised.
We've all seen it on the news.
共存なんてあったもんじゃない。
Co-existence is a farce.
僕の作品には、そのへんの動物虐待（人間中心の世界）に対しての皮肉も込めています。。
My work often parodies this egocentric, human world where cruelty to animals is commonplace.
人間は本当はすごい弱いものなんだということと、
動物を虐待することは何も知らない子供（ピティーくん）を虐待、殺傷するのと同じ事なんだ
ということを逆の視点から表現しているつもりです。
My message is that humans are actually the weak ones
and that being cruel to animals is no less atrocious than abusing or killing innocent children (ie: Pity).
Take a look from the other side of the fence.
だから、グル〜ミ〜は『おとなぐま』なのです。
（こんなことばかり言ってると偽善者と思われるのであまり言いませんが）
In this sense, Gloomy is an "adult" bear.
( not to sound like a hypocritical adult...)
そういうものを完全に無視して描かれているのが商業イラストの動物たちです。
Animal illustrations in advertisement are perfect examples of utter insensitivity in this regard.
人間と仲良くオテテつないで踊ってるクマさんのイラストがあるとします。
Say there's an illustration of a bear holding hands, dancing happily with a human.
それってすごく残酷な絵だと思いませんか？
Is this not the epitome of cruelty?
熊は年間に何百頭と人間に殺されていると言ってましたが、
そんな人間と手をつながらされてるんですよ、しかも笑顔で。
I've told you that hundreds of bears are killed by humans each year,
yet they are depicted holding hands and dancing with their executioners. Smiling, no less.
それは『親をナチスに殺されたあげく、ヒトラーと手をつながされ、笑顔で仲良く踊らされてる』ようなもの。
Isn't this comparable to a child being forced to hold hands and dance with Hitler, who has just exterminated his parents?

Because these ads are created by and for humans.

「人間」っていう生き物は本当に身勝手ですよね。
Cruelty to animals is not PC (politically correct),
食べるのは良くて、虐待がNGなんですもの（ぼくは週３回はトンカツをたべます）。
but eating them is totally OK. (I personally eat pork cutlet 3 times a week)
動物にすればホントのところ、どっちがイヤなんでしょう？
Which is worse from the animals' point of view?
そう考えると「ちゃんと残さずに食べないと」などと思う。
It certainly makes me want to finish everything on my plate and not waste any food whatsoever.
でもそれは単なる人間の適応規制にすぎないんですよね、そう考えて気休めにするんです。
But that's simply another rule created to ease our consciences.
全部キレイにたいらげようが一口食って残そうが、死んじゃったブタさんにすればもうどっちでもいいこと。
食べられてることすら知らないでしょうし。
The poor pig who has been slaughtered for meat doesn't care whether you've cleaned off your plate or not.
In fact, he doesn't even know he's been eaten.
まぁ残さず食べれば、生ゴミが減ってゴミ問題には多少貢献してることにはなりますが。
But if you clean off your plate, at least you won't be adding to the excessive overflow of raw garbage,
which is another problem in our society.

動物問題に限らず、何が良くてナニがダメかがメチャクチャな人間界。
Cruelty to animals is not the only example of our morally confused world.
「暴力団追放」と世間では言われてますが、映画やドラマなどでは当り前のようにヤクザや殺し屋が
法律で禁止されてるはずのピストルをぶっぱなし、人を殺しまくる。
Our society denounces syndicated crime,
yet the media is rife with gangsters and murderers offing people with "supposedly" illegal weapons.
シャブもやりまくり、その注射器をかまえる仕種までかっこよく演出（笑）。
They make shooting up crystal meth look so incredibly cool!
銭湯やプールで禁止されているはずの「もんもん」は絶対必要不可欠。主人公は特別ヴァージョン！
Aren't full body tattoos supposed to be outlawed in public baths and pools? Not for the star of this gangster flick!
そんな人たちが主役でシリーズが続いたりしてヒットしちゃう始末。
are the stars of hit TV series.
アクション映画とかを観ていて、主人公が無敵の殺し屋で、大口径のマグナムとかを持ってたら
なんかカッコイイとか思うでしょう？
How many heroes of action films are cold-blooded assassins wielding high caliber magnums?
Aren?ft they great?
でも現実なら完全に犯罪者です。
But in reality, they would be total criminals.
犯罪者たちをカッコイイって思ってるんです。
（もちろんぼくも思ってます）
そう考えるとなんか笑えるでしょ？
And we glorify them. (Me, included)
Isn't that hilarious?

誰でも思ったことあると思いますが、
自動車は日本では最高速度１００キロ以上出していいところ（サーキットは除く）はありません。
On a different note, everyone knows that there isn't a highway in Japan with a speed limit of over 100 km/hr. (besides racing circuits)
でも１００キロ以上出ない普通自動車や自動二輪はないでしょ。
Then why are all our cars and motorcycles designed to exceed 100 km/hr?
まぁ例えばそれを出ないようにして
What if you ran an ad that said,
『この車は１００キロ以上出ないように造りました！
先進の新開発エンジン50％パワーダウン!!!（当社比）』
"This car is designed not to exceed 100 km/hr. Using our cutting edge technology,
we've developed an engine that runs at 50% capacity!! (based on our own estimates)."
なんて広告なんかに載せたら誰も買いませんもんね。
No one would buy it!
よく『地球にやさしい』とかいうコピーを目にしますが、あれもおかしな話。
And take the often used phrase, "Be kind to our environment".
オゾン層破壊も大気汚染も、結果的に人間が生きて行けなくなるからなんとかしようとしているだけであって
地球がかわいそうだからとかじゃない。
Curbing air pollution and destruction of the ozone layer is all about enabling the human species to survive,
not about preserving our poor earth.
『地球のためにできること』とか、そんなもの人間が生き延びるための手段にすぎないのです。
Environmental protection initiatives (think eco-friendly) are to ensure our own viability, nothing more.
もっと『人類が滅びないために』とか、正直に言ったほうがよっぽどカッコイイのに。
It would be so much more heroic to be up front, with phrases like,
"Let?fs ensure our own survival!"
